Medicine For Heartburn

All heartburn sufferers, including myself, have tried or currently use some kind of medicine for heartburn.  Like most medications, medicines for heartburn merely mask the real problem of heartburn.  OTC heartburn medications typically last for 1 to 2 hours in reducing stomach acid.  These types of medicines for indigestion or heartburn are called antacids, H2 Blockers, and Proton pump inhibitors.  Some of these also come in prescription strength and are usually prescribed to people with more severe heartburn symptoms or GERD as a means for heartburn prevention.Antacids, such as these, are usually the first medicines for heartburn to be recommended as Heartburn Relief.  A lot of these antacids are made up of a combination of magnesium, salts, aluminum with hydroxide, and calcium, or bicarbonate ions to neutralize the in acid in your stomach.  Here’s a list of the antacid medicines for heartburn:

Proton pump inhibitors are only available by prescription.  Proton pump inhibitors are more effective than H2 blockers and can relieve symptoms in almost everyone who has severe heartburn or GERD.  The only exception to being sold over the counter is Prilosec OTC 20mg, which is a delayed release tablet for frequent heartburn only.

  • Prilosec (omeprazole)
  • Prevacid (lansoprazole)
  • Protonix (pantoprazole)
  • Aciphex (rabeprazole)
  • Nexium (esomeprazole)

H2 blockers are used to block acid production.  These specific medicines for heartburn can be bought over the counter, but physician must prescribe the prescription strength form.  These heartburn medications are used for short-term heartburn relief.  You should know that the over-the-counter H2 blockers should only be used for a few weeks at a time.  A lot of heartburn sufferer’s benefit from taking H2 blockers at bedtime in combination with a proton pump inhibitor.

  • Axid AR (nizatidine)

I’ve come across a really strange medicine for heartburn.  It’s cow urine medicines for indigestion and it supposedly has been used to cure many ailments.  I’ve only found this to be prevalent in India.  The statistics I’ve seen are pretty impressive, but I’m not sure how scientific the results are.  Cow urine medicines for constipation is another ailment it claims to have cured.

Heartburn Prevention

As a heartburn sufferer, heartburn prevention should be a priority in your life.  With over 60 million heartburn sufferers, and with the amount of information that exists today on heartburn, you would expect to find more initiative from people for heartburn control.  Educating yourself with good solid heartburn prevention information will help ease your mind and your heartburn pain.

Avoid tight fitting clothing for obvious reasons because they put a strain on your stomach.  Also, try to avoid bending because acid reflux is quite common in this situation.

Acid Reflux Pregnancy

An acid reflux pregnancy is something most women aren’t prepared for, but with a little knowledge they can reduce or eliminate their pregnancy reflux all together.  Surprisingly there are a lot of women that experience heartburn and acid reflux during pregnancy.  Below I describe the things they can do to help eliminate their acid reflux pregnancy symptoms.

Let me first start off by saying there’s good news and bad news about acid reflux in pregnancy. First the good news… it usually subsides and resolves itself after the first month or so after giving birth.  The hormone levels return to a normal level and the body starts to go back to its normal self.  Now the bad news is that during pregnancy about 25% of the women experience heartburn or acid reflux on a daily basis.  Come the third trimester about 75% of these women experience some kind of severe heartburn or acid reflux during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and acid reflux happen for several reasons:

A changing levels of hormones, specifically progesterone, can cause the way the digestive system functions. Typically what happens is a relaxing of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which keeps the stomach acids from flowing up into the esophagus.  When the LES is relaxed then it’s very easy for stomach acids and food to reflux back into the esophagus and throat.

As the fetus grows and develops, it continues to take up more space within your body.  While the female body will adjust to handle these changes, it usually causes more pressure on the stomach.  This in turn causes the stomach acid and food to be forced up into the LES, and then to the esophagus and throat resulting in the pregnancy acid reflux.

The lifestyle changes many women go through during pregnancy are perfect catalysts for acid reflux and pregnancy.  Wearing too tight of clothing, eating large meals and then lying down, the green light many women give themselves to eat what they want we they’re pregnant, all can contribute to a reflux pregnancy.  Combine reflux and pregnancy and you probably have a very uncomfortable women.  These can all be remedied by just not doing them.  I know it sounds a little cliche, but it’s really that simple.

Probably the most important change a women can make to help control their reflux during pregnancy is to change their sleeping position.  As I discussed in my article on Acid Reflux Pillows, a reflux pillow or wedge is ideal to help elevate acid reflux during the night.

Well it’s not as bad as it sounds for you pregnant women.  The following advice should signifcantly reduce your heartburn and acid reflux in your pregnancy, but it may not totally remove it.

  • Keep your weight at an optimal weight.  The additonal weight and fat will put more stress and pressure on your stomach.  Follow your physicians guidelines for your weight gain during your pregnancy.
  • Know and stay way from the trigger foods of heartburn. The most common trigger foods are chocolates, spicy foods, citrus fruits, mustard, tomatoes, fatty foods, fried foods, and highly seasoned dishes. 
  • It is advised that pregnant woman drink more water at least 8 to 10 glasses spready out throughout the day.  If water is only taken during meals then the stomach will expand putting more pressure on the LES causing it to open at inappropriate times.. So be sure to drink water between meals.
  • Don’t eat large meals. It is suggested that taking numerous small meals throughout the day is better.
  • Make sure you rest for at least three hours after having your last meal before laying down for bed.
  • When sleeping elevate the head of the bed for at least six to eight inches. Try to sleep with an elevated head and shoulders through a heartburn or acid reflux pillow also known as a wedge pillow. 
  • Take your time and don’t rush while eating your meals. Chew your food thoroughly to help avoid heartburn and acid reflux.
  • Stay away from drinks that have caffeine, like tea, coffee, and soda. Too much of these will cause the LES to relax and let the acid to return into the esophagus.
  • Bend at the knees and not the waist.  This will help you avoid putting any additional pressure on your stomach.
  • Try to sit with good posture and don’t slouch.  The slouching causes the stomach to be pushed up towards your espohugas putting more pressure on the LES.
  • Stay away from alcoholic beverages. Just like the caffeine type of drinks, they have a tendency to relax the LES, which can trigger heartburn and acid reflux.
  • Don’t wear tight clothing. The tightness around the waist and stomach will trigger heartburn..
  • Don’t smoke. This should be obvious for many reasons beyond heartburn or acid reflux during pregnancy.

Having acid reflux or heartburn while pregnant can be painful for some women, but it doesn’t need to be.  Most if not all of the heartburn and acid reflux symptoms during pregnancy can be eliminated if the advice I listed above is followed. Acid reflux and pregnancy or heartburn and pregnancy don’t have to define the nine months whlie your pregnant… so do yourself a favor and take control now. Acid Reflux Baby

Acid reflux, which is also termed as gastroesophageal reflux, is one of the most frequent problems among infants. An acid reflux baby will often suffer from a range of conditions, from a mild degree to a severe one, such as recurrent spitting up, abdominal pain, and night waking. Commonly, acid reflux disease occurs when abdominal pressure increases while the baby is very full. Acid reflux in newborns usually develops when they are between two to four weeks old. Doctors usually prescribe medicines that minimize the production of digestive acids. Within six to nine months, the acid reflux starts to naturally subside. At this time period, the babies spend most of their time in an upright position. This is to apply the law of gravity on the food taken in; that is, the food stays down more naturally and reduces possible regurgitation.

Symptoms of acid reflux in babies includes the adverse loss of weight, continual vomiting, recurrent choking episodes, too much drooling, problems in swallowing, hoarseness, food aversion and chronic ear infection.

While there are noticeable infant reflux symptoms, some infants may not show signs such as throwing up. It’s because their tendency is to swallow the acids instead. Although the some acid reflux infants are not bothered by the reflux, this could still result in irritation and damage to the esophagus. One way of detecting silent acid reflux in infants is through the pH probe.

To diagnose acid reflux disease in infants, certain tests can be performed. One of which is the barium test where the reflux baby has to swallow a little amount of barium. Then the doctor could detect the passage of food outlined by the chemical. However, it will only work in the moment that the child is undergoing acid reflux while being tested. In place of barium, a radioactive solution could also be made to swallow before an x-ray. Through this, the frequency of the acid reflux could be tested. An endoscope views the infant’s mouth, esophagus and the tract of food in the stomach.

An effective cure for infant acid reflux is a thickened formula. This could be done by adding cereal into the baby’s food. And when feeding the infant, keep him in an upright position and not lying on his back. The same case is true when changing the diaper, especially after feeding when you know that the infant is still full. It would be best if the infant can burp frequently to reduce the acid reflux. Small amount of meals should be given at short time intervals.

Breastfeeding will also serve as a great help to decrease the vomiting and the symptoms of acid reflux in infants. The nutrients in a mother’s breast milk have been proven to supplement the needs of the infants. One of the most common forms of infant acid reflux prevention is a life style change for your baby which includes:

  • Small, frequent meals,
  • Holding the baby upright during feeding and for approximately one half hour after feeding,
  • Thickening formula with rice cereal, and
  • Modifying the child’s sleeping position by elevating the head of the crib or bed.  This is easy to do with an infant acid reflux pillow. For an infant too young to be placed on a pillow, simply put the pillow on top of the mattress and under the sheet, or under the mattress. Gravity will prevent the contents of the stomach from refluxing back into the esophagus.

Treating reflux in older children follows the same recommendations as for adults:

Modify diet to eliminate acid producing foods such as citrus, tomato products, chocolate, carbonated beverages, and very spicy foods. Every food does not trigger reflux in everyone; so try eliminating all and slowing adding them back one at a time. Have the child avoid lying down for at least an hour after eating. Using an infant wedge pillow to elevate the torso during sleep is definitely an option.  If these things don’t help then your child may need medication. Always check with your child’s physician before making any changes.

Once a newborn has been identified as an acid reflux infant, precautionary measures should immediately follow.
